DTS File Created After Stored Proc executed now what?

I'm trying to fire a DTS package through a stored procedure.

After running my one stored procedure I got my DTS file to create just fine. However after this point I'm stuck...I can't do anything else with this file and I need to update data with it.

How would I use the DTS file to update my data.

Thanks,

RB

RB,

There is no direct way to do this via a SP. In my experience, I've seen three ways to work around this:

1) Use xp_cmdshell. This simply executes a command in the command shell. Usefull if you already have a batch script running your DTS.

2) Use OLE. You can create and work with Com objects via the sp_OA* methods. You will need to create the DTS objects and run properties from them.

3) Use a scheduled Job. Saw this recently, the idea is to create a new scheduled job that runs your DTS, then run the job, then delete the scheduled job.

None are pretty, but they all work.

DTS Fails as JOB

Hi Freinds,
SQL 2000
I have a DTS where reads a file from other server:
\\server2\uploads\tree.csv
When I'm inside the DTS and running it, then everything is fine. Even if I
right click on DTS and run , works fine.
The problem comes when I schedule the DTS as a job. JOB Fails : INVALID PATH
for \\server\.....
Is this a security issue? How can I solve it
Thanks in advance,

DTS Fails

Good Morning,

I've been running into a small problem. There are two people that usually create local packages to be executed by the DTS. Either my boss or I. The problem that I have been running into is, there are some local packages that will not execute when I try to run them. These packages are that my boss has created. When she runs them they work fine. But when I run them they just don't run. The only way I can run the local package is if I log in into the server and run it from there.

The error that I keep getting is:

Unspecified Error
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data Source Name not found and no default driver specified.

What would I be able to do so that I can execute this local package from my computer?Could try changing the owner of the DTS package.

Have a look at the following link and tell me if it helps your situation.

http://www.sqldts.com/?212|||What is the package doing exactly. Is it accessing an odbc datasource and if so do you have this set up locally?|||It is accessing a datasource, and it has been set up on my machine. We use the same data source to import information. I am able to run other DTS that have been created by her, but I am not successful at executing all of them.

I did go to the link listed by aldo_2003 and there was some helpful information. So if I am not apart of the sysadmin group, then that can be a reason for me not being able to execute the local package? Cause like i said, when I log on the our server, I am able to execute the package just fine. Just not from my machine.|||You need to be either ower or part of sysadmin to execute the package to run.|||Otherwise what you can do is open the query analyzer, connect to the remote server and EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'dtsrun /S (local) /U {uid} /P {password} /N {name dts package}'

With this you can see whether the package executes well or not.

If you wish to schedule this package on the remote server you need to modify the DTSrun on each step from the schedule as well.
Modify the dts to read the same: dtsrun /S (local) /U etc... via the Tab Steps and the button Edit|||Thank you very much for all your help. I was listed as a sysadmin, but there were a few drivers that I had to add to my user dsn. That was the whole reason why I was getting the error. Everything works fine now.|||This is how I did this.

control panel -> administrative tools -> Data Sources -> User DSN -> Add -> Select Driver -> Finish

Then you will be prompted to type in the Data Source, Host, and Port.

Then you should be able to run the local package.

DTS Fail when IDENTITY(1,1)

Hi,

i m facing this error when running DTS on IDENTITY(1,1) Field.
how can this field increment automatically ?

Step Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) Data Pump
Step Error Description:The number of failing rows exceeds the maximum specified. (Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) Data Pump (80040e21): Insert error, column 14 ('s_no', DBTYPE_I4), status 10: Integrity violation; attempt to insert NULL data or data which violates constraints.) (Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server (80040e21): Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.)
Step Error code: 8004206ADon't include any tranformation for the IDENTITY column. In other words, have DTS ignore that column and let the database engine deal with it.

-PatP|||there is a option button (check box) in your transformation task that says
"enable identity insert"
change that.|||Does the table have existing data?

Does your import file have existing "keys" (boy I hate to use that word here) that need to be imported into that column?

Does this import need to update as well as add data (or delete)?|||Hi,
Actually guys i have not run the DTS wizard to transform data i have written my own dts package that transfer hetrogenous data from one table to another.

e.g

Table1
mfg_no varchar(255)
Product_Name varchar(255)
Description varchar(255)

Table2
s_no int IDENTITY(1,1) Not Null {constraint for identity seed 1)
mfgno varchar(255)
ProductName varchar(255)

i just have to transfer data column (mfgno and product name) from Table1 to Table 2. the problem is that when i run dts its not inserting "s_no" automatically in Table 2 (i hope SQL server should handle this but its not working). if i remove constraint of identity (s_no)and make it allow Null then data transfer successfully.

i m using DTSDataPump in package to transform data.

waiting for ur reply|||Does the table have existing data?
NO

Does your import file have existing "keys" (boy I hate to use that word here) that need to be imported into that column?
NO there is no existing keys in SourceTable

Does this import need to update as well as add data (or delete)?
No it just Add data|||ctually guys i have not run the DTS wizard to transform data i have written my own dts package that transfer hetrogenous data from one table to another. That is what I thought... Just view the transform code, and remove any transformation for the IDENTITY column. It ought to be pretty simple.

-PatP|||Don't include any tranformation for the IDENTITY column. In other words, have DTS ignore that column and let the database engine deal with it.

-PatP

yes i have't include any transformation for the identity column and i m wonder why db engine not handle this |||I don't get it...

u run direct quries its working fine :( but if i run dts package then it fails :(|||That's what I don't get.

Why are you bothering with a DTS package at all?|||That's what I don't get.

Why are you bothering with a DTS package at all?

i want to tranfer data from one table to another on schedule basis so that i need a DTS package that tranfer only those column data that i want to tranfer.

whole dts working fine its transform the desired column to anothe table but when identiy column is removed cuz destination table has a unique column type int and identity seed 1.

:( this is sample code u can run it . if u remove constraint on s_no it will work fine. try this

DTS error [DNETLIB]

I am copying files from one database to another. Identical tables that I
created by just Generating SQL Scripts from the source database and running
it on my new database.
This works from most of my files.
One error I am getting for a few of tables is: [DNETLIB].
What is this?
Thanks,
TomNow I cannot even connect if I right click the database icon and choose
export data.
When I go to the first screen: Choose Data Source.
I get the following error:
Error Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Error Description: [DBNETLIB]
Context: Error during initialization of the provider.
How can that be?
I just ran this a couple of minutes ago and had no problem with it. I can
look at the tables fine in Sql Enterprise Manager.
Thanks,
Tom

DTS Error

on SQL 2000 running on Windows 2000.

DTS Error

Hi,
Can any body help me to sort out this problem

I am running a DTS package source as dbf file and destination as sqlserver database the following error occurs

for row number 2035 errors encountered so far on this
task 1. insert error, column 3 ('arch_dt', DB_TYPE DBTIMESTAMP)

when i was opening dbf file in foxbase its showing (arch_dt field) date as datatype the same when i was importing to access the datatype is changing to text type.

so daily manually i am opening in excel file and delete the records where the line error occurs.

in excel file that particular row will have some text format instead of dateformat.

how can i solve this error without manual interaction..

with regards
rajkumarIf you insert it as a chracter datatype then you can check the value and correct it.
You could also probably use an activex script on it but that would be slow.

DTS cube processing from a non sa account

We are running a DTS package from a non-sa owned job and I am getting the following message:

A problem occurred while attempting to logon as the Windows user 'SQLAgentCmdExec': The parameter is incorrect.

When I set the Sql Agent proxy account to an windows administrator on the sql server it works fine.

However when the Sql Agent proxy account is not administrator I get the above error.

Please note that the Analysis Services is located on a different machine.

Thanks

Grant admin privileges to the SQLAgent service account, which is required to carry on such tasks and to overcome this issue.

Do you mean that the sqlagent stratup account should be windows sys admin?

Can I do it with less power priviliges?

Thanks

Its always better and recommended to keep SQL service accounts with Admin privileges on the box.|||Originally posted by Satya

Hi,

Thanks again for your help.

Do you know what permissions are required for sql server to run cube processing that resides on a different machine.

DTS ActiveX Script error

The 1st 4 lines of code were copied verbatim from a VBS file that works
perfectly.
Why does it fail when running from a DTS ActiveX script?
Function Main()
set objShell = WScript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
wait = true
strEXEC = "C:\FTPTest\FTPSNAP.BAT"
objShell.run strEXEC, 1, wait
Main = DTSTaskExecResult_Success
End Function
Debugging is not an option until I know how to make JIT debugging work...
(see my other posts on JIT Debugging)
Regards,
John> set objShell = WScript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
The WScipt object is available from a Windows Scripting Host environment but
not from a DTS ActiveX script task.
It looks to me like you should use a DTS ExecuteProcess task instead.
Hope this helps.

I am not using VBNET, yet.
All my VB experience comes from MS Office with VBA.
Do you have a link that covers the same or similar topics from the
standpoint of using VB6 projects or an excel macro with VBA code?
From looking at the code samples on your link... I don't recognize the "Try"
and "End Try" statements nor the "Catch exc" I assume those are some new NE
T
commands?

Dts 2000 packages with SSIS

I need help,

I've got 51 pretty complex Dts packages that are running on Sql 2000. I'm
trying to make them run on Sql 2005 without at first migrating them with the
migration wizard, since i know that many of them cannot be migrated.

I'm using the "Execute DTS 2000 Package Task Editor" to make them run in an
SSIS package, some of them are running fine, but many of them, especially
those with a "Data Driven Query Task" are returning this error:

Error: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040427): Execution
was canceled by user. at DTS.PackageClass.Execute() at
Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Tasks.Exec80PackageTask.Exec80PackageTask.ExecuteThread()

After many research on the web, i've reinstalled the Sql 2000 tools on the
Sql 2005 server, but i'm still receiving the same error. Also, i've tried to
repair the "Microsoft Sql Server 2005 backward compatibility" in the
Add/remove program of the Sql 2005 server without much success.

For your info, i've installed the hotfix Build 2153 on both the server and
the client and i'm still having the same problem......

Any idea?

Thanks. What happens when you just run them via dtsrun and/or the DTS designer?|||

They run fine without any errors!

DTS 2000 Package Error(s)

From MS SQL Server Management Studio 2005, I register and connect to MS SQL 2000 (SP4) running on another server. I can see the list of 2000 DTS packages on the other server, but when I try to open them I first get:

Error Source : Microsoft Data Transfformation Services (DTS) Package

Error Description : The DTS host failed to load or save the package properly.

I click the OK button and get:

The selected package cannot be opened. The DTS Desiger has been closed.

I click this OK button and get to now famous:

SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer components are required to edit DTS packages. Install the special Web download, "SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer Components" to use this feature. (Microsoft.SqlServer.DtsObjectExplorerUI)

I have already been to the Feature Pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - November 2005 page and installed the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components and the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer Components.

Now, the DTS Designer does not close. It stays open. I can see inside the package, but all I see are the transformation lines and the precedence lines. The icons are invisable. If I click on the invisable icons, at the end of the lines, an icon appears. This is not a normal icon. It looks like little windows with a blue border and title bar. Nothing I've seen before. Oh it gets better. If I now double-click the icons, the properties window appear as normal. Looks good... I don't need to change anything. I then press the OK button and get the Task references, like I modified the connection. I do not clear the trasformation. I just click the OK and like magic the connection icon looks at it should. This works on everthing I've tried, except for Execute SQL Task icons. I can save it, but not as the save name. I can open the new saved package. It look and works fine.

So whats up?

I am having the same issues (same errors, etc). DTS Designer 2000 will open a 2000 package that has been saved to a SQL 2005 Server SP1 (9.00.2153.00) in the sysdtspackges table, but will not work with a SQL 2000 Server SP4 (8.00.2185). We are running with all the latest service packs and hotfixes for both environments. As far as I can tell, DTS Designer 2000 is not backward compatible, which is an issue for the 450+ DTS 2000 Packages that cannot be converted to SSIS easily. It appears to me that our DBA team will need to keep both the 2000 and 2005 clients installed to support Legacy systems because of this.|||

Have you run SQL profiler against it to see what is happening? If this uses

Thanks for the reply. Actually the BI Accelerator is/was a Microsoft
Application (Microsoft Accelerator for BI), but I believe it's been retired.
I think the issue was with the compatibility level of my DB's. I had them
set to 80 instead of 90. I'm going to do a bit more testing, but I hope that
was the problem.
If you can think of anything else I should check please let me know.
Thanks,

DTS : Format Problem !

I have a statement in the DTS ( Activex Script ) like this :

TomorrowDate = Format$(Now, "yyyy-mm-dd")

When i am running the package, i am getting the following error :

ActiveX Script Task: undefined

Error Code: 0

Error Source= Microsoft VBScript compilation error

Error Description: Invalid character

Error on Line 8

Can anyone tell me what is the solution to this error ?

Thanks in advance.

Remove the $ in Format$

Hi vijay,

Thanks. Even when i removed $ from format, still an error :

Telling that :

Type Mismatch "Format"

DTS "The Parameter Is Incorrect" Error

I'm running SqlServer 2000 and am trying to write a DTS. For some reason I keep getting that error for my Dynamic Property Task and not sure why. I've tried giving my Package a password like was mentioned in another thread on here, but that didn't work either.

I'm trying to dynamically set a Data Source for an Excel connected, using a query.

Query:

DECLARE @.directory VARCHAR(1000)
SET @.directory = 'C:\'
EXEC [Legacy].[dbo].[spr_GetNewestExcel] @.directory

The Store Procedure:

CREATE PROCEDURE spr_GetNewestExcel
(
@.directory VARCHAR(1000)
)
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @.cmdParam VARCHAR(8000)

--Temp Table that saves the output of a DOS command.
CREATE TABLE #output
(
output VARCHAR(300)
)

--Temp Table that saves the output of a "dir" DOS output, in parts.
CREATE TABLE #files
(
fileDate VARCHAR(20),
fileSize VARCHAR(20),
fileName VARCHAR(100)
)

--Sets the command parameter
SET @.cmdParam = 'dir "' + @.directory + '"'

--Inserts the output of the above DOS command into a table
INSERT INTO #output
EXEC master..xp_cmdshell @.cmdParam

--Parses the #output table for the files with the correct extension and breaks it up into
--Date, Size, and Name.
INSERT INTO #files
SELECT
SUBSTRING(output, 0, 21) As fileDate,
LTRIM(SUBSTRING(output, 21, 18)) As fileSize,
SUBSTRING(output, 40, LEN(output))
FROM #output
WHERE output LIKE '%.xls'

--Displays the values
SELECT TOP 1
CASE
WHEN SUBSTRING(@.directory, LEN(@.directory), 1) = '\' THEN @.directory + fileName
ELSE @.directory + '\' + fileName
END AS fileName
FROM #files ORDER BY fileDate DESC

DROP TABLE #output
DROP TABLE #files
END

The Stored Procedure runs great on its own, it displays a list of filenames with the .xls extension in the desired directory, which is what I want. It should put the first in the list((if there is more than one)) as the datasource, but it doesn't.

When I go to the "Add/Edit Assignment" window for it, and push "Refresh" to preview it, it gives me a "The Parameter Is Incorrect".

Any help would be much appreciated, this has had me stumped for quite some time.

peace,
CR
you're in the wrong forum. this forum is about ssis, not dts.|||fair enough, I saw other threads similar to this one, so I posted here. And since the description mentions data transforms, seemed fitting. Though feel free to point me in the right direction since the other boards don't seem anywhere near as fitting as this one. Least not to me.|||Well after a while I finally determined what was wrong, but I must say, what a vague error.

Anyway, apparently Dynamic Properties don't like when you use Inserts, that is all.

Thanks for reading!

There is no forum for DTS but the old newsgroup is still alive and well: microsoft.public.sqlserver.dts

I spect that you understand my english. About this problem it isn′t that Dynamic Properties don't like Inserts the problem is the messages that SQL return when you make an insert. You have to add to your code "SET NOCOUNT ON " to ommit the messages.
