Whats happens when moving a sql server database to another sql server database and the DTS fails. Does it copy half the data or it doesn't copy any data??
No it does not that is why we usually back up the current copy before implementing a new one if roll back may be needed. Hope this helps|||Oh Ok, Thank u so much, that was my interview question.Tuesday, March 27, 2012
DTS fails on Stored Procedure warning
I am calling a stored proc from a DTS package in SQL 2000 using Execute SQL
step & when I try to execute it from DTS, I get 'failed on execution', but
when I run the stored proc manually, it runs fine, but gives a couple of
warnings:
Warning: Null value is eliminated by an aggregate or other SET operation.
DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your
system administrator.
Any ideas why this happens?
Thanks,
Mo
you can setup an option when you call a dbcc command
generally there is a "no_msg" (or an option like this; read the BOL) which
disabled output except in case of errors.

DTS fails coes it refuses to fill the unique id colum
THe unique Id column is set to identity seed. Yet when transfering 1500 records it fails to stuff them all becuase it says there is a NULL in unique id column.
"Cannot insert the value NULL into column UID column does not allow"
Yet in the transformation screen I am setting the UID column to <ignore> meaning I do not have that value in my source and I am wanting the destination table to do it's thing and incrememnt by 1 the identity seed.
Is this common?
THe source and destination tables are in the same databes.
When you click on "Transform" uncheck where it says "Enable Identity Insert"
|||Thank you very much.
It worked.
I am not sure I "logically" understand that though.
|||When you have enable Identity Insert checked in your DTS wizard what it does is says "I want you to insert the identity field that is coming from the table I'm copying from". This is useful when you have a truncated table and you want to keep your identity field values for data integrity.
Now comes the however.
When you set to Ignore the Identity column in your transformation you were essentially telling it to insert null values, and Identity columns can't be null. Had you not selected that then you would have most likely received the error that says you can't insert duplicates into your identiy column as it violates the unique constraint.
DTS fails at customer site with "Too many columns", works locally
I have a set of ActiveX transforms that execute on my customers flat transaction data files, destination a single database table. Since they switched to a new method of generating the flat file using SAS, the DTS package mysteriously will fail at a couple select records. The error is always the same, and turning on error logging in DTS yielded this:
Step 'DTSStep_DTSDataPumpTask_1' failed
Step Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services Flat File Rowset Provider
Step Error Description:Too many columns found in the current row; non-whitespace characters were found after the last defined column's data.
Step Error code: 80043013
Step Error Help File: DTSFFile.hlp
Step Error Help Context ID:0
Step Execution Started: 11/16/2004 6:37:51 PM
Step Execution Completed: 11/16/2004 6:39:39 PM
Total Step Execution Time: 107.415 seconds
Progress count in Step: 515000
The exact same file parses all the way through on my laptop, with the same DTS package. Tests have revealed no strange characters or whitespaces in the data file, not at that record (running a Test... on any of the active x transforms will fail at row 515186 always, until that row is deleted and it fails on some subsequent row - this iteration went on at the customer site until about 5 rows were deleted this month and it finally worked), not at any other records. My database and the customer database are both using the same, default character set.
The only microsoft KB article referencing anything resembling my problem is
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;292588
but this does not hold because I am not specifying fixed width, but rather comma delimited.
If anyone has any ideas about what other environmental variables are coming into play here, please let me know - I'm at the end of my rope. I believe we are both patched up to SQL 2000 SP3. They have an XP client connecting to a 2003 server; I have an XP client/server. Neither machine has the NLS_LANG environment variable set. This may not be helpful...but have you considered just using a stored procedure instead?|||What happens to that row when you try to import the file into access? If you create an extra column at the top of the flat file, it should insert whatevers in that column for the five offending rows right? Once you get it into a table query it with a NOT NULL. It might give you a clue as to what the offending characters are.
If your stuck with the file then you might just have to use the insertfail phase to make the pump task skip to the next record when it finds an offending row. Read up on multiphase to find out exactly how you'd do this.
Sorry can't help you more.|||Modify the DTS package to use an Execute Process Task and then use bcp.
-or-Use Execute SQL Task and the Bulk Insert Transact-SQL command.|||...the file imports fine here with the exact same DTS package, so I don't want to modify it to address a problem that isn't really the problem. IN other words, there is nothing to indicate there is anything actually wrong with the data itself - no whitespaces, no bad characters or problem causing characters, no datatype mismatch, nothing; it looks just like the last row. Here are the rows before and after as well as the one that failed:
737,10/15/2004,09:11:39,114,15536,1
737,10/15/2004,09:11:49,114,18408,1
737,10/15/2004,09:11:54,714,18024,1
I am not using column 5, but all the others. From last month to this month the number of offending rows increased from 1 to 7, so I don't want to start throwing away data that for all other intensive purposes looks good automatically in case it starts multiplying.
Since it works here but fails there, it has to be something environmental, maybe with character sets or??|||Generating files from SAS...Like from a mainframe?
I betcha you got some low values [CHAR('00') ] going on...
I know you don't want to alter your process, but I ALWAYS create a staging environment and load the data to it, then audit the data to look for problems...then I move the data in after I verify it...
And it's all done with a stored procedure|||Thanks for the tip. I am looking into how these "low values" occur and how these EBCDIC to ASCII conversions can get hung up. I'm sure the answer lies somewhere in there.
Well, the front end application will run a custom DTS package, but not a custom SP. At least the staging need is moot, because it rolls the whole thing back if one record fails...

DTS Fails
I've been running into a small problem. There are two people that usually create local packages to be executed by the DTS. Either my boss or I. The problem that I have been running into is, there are some local packages that will not execute when I try to run them. These packages are that my boss has created. When she runs them they work fine. But when I run them they just don't run. The only way I can run the local package is if I log in into the server and run it from there.
The error that I keep getting is:
Unspecified Error
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data Source Name not found and no default driver specified.
What would I be able to do so that I can execute this local package from my computer?Could try changing the owner of the DTS package.
Have a look at the following link and tell me if it helps your situation.
http://www.sqldts.com/?212|||What is the package doing exactly. Is it accessing an odbc datasource and if so do you have this set up locally?|||It is accessing a datasource, and it has been set up on my machine. We use the same data source to import information. I am able to run other DTS that have been created by her, but I am not successful at executing all of them.
I did go to the link listed by aldo_2003 and there was some helpful information. So if I am not apart of the sysadmin group, then that can be a reason for me not being able to execute the local package? Cause like i said, when I log on the our server, I am able to execute the package just fine. Just not from my machine.|||You need to be either ower or part of sysadmin to execute the package to run.|||Otherwise what you can do is open the query analyzer, connect to the remote server and EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'dtsrun /S (local) /U {uid} /P {password} /N {name dts package}'
With this you can see whether the package executes well or not.
If you wish to schedule this package on the remote server you need to modify the DTSrun on each step from the schedule as well.
Modify the dts to read the same: dtsrun /S (local) /U etc... via the Tab Steps and the button Edit|||Thank you very much for all your help. I was listed as a sysadmin, but there were a few drivers that I had to add to my user dsn. That was the whole reason why I was getting the error. Everything works fine now.|||This is how I did this.
control panel -> administrative tools -> Data Sources -> User DSN -> Add -> Select Driver -> Finish
Then you will be prompted to type in the Data Source, Host, and Port.
Then you should be able to run the local package.
dts fail
Hi y'all,
I'm facing a database data transmission problem during synchronysing. When dts fails i need a better solution instead inconsistent data.
I'm looking for data comparer for sql server where i have total control of my actions.
Any suggestions.
THanks in advance!
DTS should not be synchronizing your database because that is job of replication but the rest of your post says what you need is SQL Compare, there are third party tools and Microsoft have one so test drive it. If you think you need replication all I have to tell you is get a very good book or you can run into serious problems. Hope this helps.
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/teamsystem/aa718667.aspx
so i need a database compare tool that generates a script...Thanks!
sqlDTS Export fails with "Invalid Object Name"
table was renamed to tbl_Users, and a view was created called MALL_Customers
which simply selects all rows from tbl_Users, for backwards compatibility
with the web app accessing the database.
The database works fine; the web app works fine. All permissions are set
properly on all objects. The view is accessible via EM, as is the table.
However, when I attempt to run a DTS Export of this database to an empty
database on the same server, I get "invalid object name" on MALL_Customers.
Apparently somewhere, in some trigger, stored proc, or some other object,
there is a reference to MALL_Customers that doesn't recognize the VIEW as a
valid object, but is instead looking for a TABLE with that name. I cannot
find it anywhere, and I don't know where to start.
The overall question then is, how do I find all references to the text
"MALL_Customers" in the database schema so that I can track down why my DTS
package is failing. I have another database with a similar problem, and I
think the solution to this problem will also solve the other -- hidden
references somewhere in the database that cause "invalid object name" errors
when using DTS.
Where do I start?
Thanks in Advance,
Marcyou can search through the system table syscomments which, contains entries
for each view, rule, default, trigger, CHECK constraint, DEFAULT constraint,
and stored procedure
Ex:
select * from syscomments where text like '%MALL_Customers%'
Also you can use stored procedure sp_depends to know dependencies of the
existing object.
Ex:
sp_depends 'MALL_Customers'

DTS execution from client machine fails connecting to Oracle
Server. When I run it directly on the server (from Enterprise
Manager), it works fine. When I run it from Enterprise Manager on a
client machine that does not have the Oracle client software, it does
not run, giving me the error: "The Oracle client and networking
components were not found...". I was hoping I wouldn't need to have
the client software installed on a machine other than the server where
Sql Server is running. The problem here is that there are a number of
machines from where I would like to execute this DTS package that I do
not want to install/configure the Oracle client software. I don't
quite understand why the configuration of the client is important
here. In my mind, when I am using enterprise manager from a client
machine, I am using it sort of like a terminal services client to
connect to the server. I guess there is a lot more happening in the
background.

However when i try to schedule the task and run the job from SQL Server Agent, i get the following error.

the error occurs on the following line

When scheduled it runs under the context of the sql server service account...
Also the same thing with the drive mappings

the scheduled task is run by the /MYSERVER/SYSTEM user... shouldnt that user have all permissions.
how do i change permissions for the user /MYSERVER/SYSTEM if it doesnt have all permissions.

Dts Execute Problem
My dts fails in step 3 when i run it from asp.net. But it works fine in when i run in Designer.
In step 3, it reads some data from a text source (on a shared place). And it gives me error :
Step Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services Flat File Rowset Provider
Step Error Description:Error opening datafile: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
Step Error code: 80004005
Step Error Help FileTSFFile.hlp
Step Error Help Context ID:0
I know that when i run it on Designer, it works by my current Windows Loginname. And when i execute dts in asp.net page, it works by SqlAgent's login name. And also i made SqlAgent's Username (as a Domain UserName) a Local Admin in the file shared server.
Any idea?
Regards..
It appears that your ASP.NET application does not have permission to access the flat file.
However, it is very unlikely that your ASP.NET application is running in the context of the SQL Agent account.
How are you launching the package - using the API in your code, or calling sp_start_job?
|||I think my ASP:NET application has permission because i can get list of that folder's files and can edit one of them.My application runs with my current AD username/password.
I use Interop.DTS class to run Dts. I can run other dts correctly with this method but i can't run this one.

1. Is there an increased load being placed on the server of late?
2. Are there a number of DTS tasks scheduled to run simultaneously?
3. Are there other OS or application tasks scheduled to run at or near the same time as this package?
4. Do you know precisely what step DTS is failing on?
5. Is it possible to schedule and run this task from another SQL Server?
Some additional thoughts (which you may already know and I apologize if you do):
1. DTS runs in a separate memory space from SQL Server; multiple DTS packages running simultaneously will degrade the amount of RAM available.
2. There is a windows registry setting for throttling the number of DTS (or was it command -- .exe -- objects that can run simultaneously). I think the default is 10. Search MSDN.
3. If you use DTS heavily on one server, consider throttling back the amount of memory available to SQL Server; I know that this is NOT recommended by MS, but I have done this in the past with a good deal of success.
I hope that you can trace the roots of your issue; good luck.

hmscott
DTS error not configured for data access
How can I restore data access? You may need to allow other SQL servers to connect. In enterprise manager, right-click on the server and select properties. On the Connections tab, check the box in the Remote Servers frame "Allow other SQL Servers to connect remotely to this SQL Server using RPC".|||No good. Properties showed remote connection OK. I unchecked, rechecked and rebooted to make sure. same problem.|||Can you create a connection to the server in a new DTS package?
It may be that you have to recreate the Server Connections in the existing package(s).|||No. Fails for both new and existing packages. The rebuild was apparently caused by converting databases from another machine from Sql 6.5. After the conversion we saw some odd things showing in msdb and lost alerts, operators etc. I also saw some table structure changes. Even though we didn't include msdb it looked like stuff from 6.5's was showing up. This looks to be a repercussion related to that.
Waht I can't seem to find anywhere is any discussion of the error. DTS's error window says the source is OLE but gives no eror number|||Just to add to the fun, I ignored the error message and built the queries without the point & click junk. Package ran fine. So it looks like all I've lost the visual references to that server.sql
DTS ERror Email
When a step in the package fails i would like to be emailed with the error
details.
I have managed to make the Package email me with the 'Send Email Task'
feature, but can;t seem to get the error details.
Any ideas?
You'd have to have the eMail Task send query output as part of the message
or as an attachment. The query you'd execute would be against the package
logs, given that you've enabled package logging.
The logs are stored in the msdb system database. There are logs for the
packages, steps, and tasks, seperately, but you can write a query against
them to extract out which ones ran, at what times, and whether or not any of
them had errors. The package log will give you just generic success and/or
failure information.
Sincerely,
Anthony Thomas
