I really need help!!!
I built a DTS package that makes data pump from Paradox 7.0 to SQL Server. If I execute this package from Package Designer everything goes fine no matter if Paradox files are located in local or mapped folders.
However, If I execute the package from T-SQL, it crashes when if Paradox files are located in a mapped drive saying "not valid path" (With local folder it works)
Im using xp_cmdshell 'DTS_Run /S "server name" /N "package name" /E'
Can anyone tell me whats wrong with this

DTS Copy locks web
I built a simple DTS job to copy the contents of a table in a SQL Server
2000 database from one server to another.
The transformation is a simple column copy from source table to destination
table.
I checked the DTS options: Use Fast Load, Keep Null Values , Enable Identity
Insert and Always Commit Final Batch (inerst batch size=5000).
The source table has about 0.5 million records
As soon as I start the DTS job, any web page with a database connection
freezes up (i.e. you cannnot load it into a browser)
I do not have the Table Lock option set in the DTS package.
Does anyone have any ideas why a copy package would lock up the application
like this?

Is the DTS package copying from or to the same table the pages are
accessing?

|||It copies from the table that the web page is accesssing.
But a copy is just a read.
Why would this apparently lock the table?

Because the web page connection has an isolation level of repeatable
read or serializable. Yes, it's excessive caution, but I suspect it's
the answer.

From the issue appearance, it seemed that a deadlock was caused. To narrow
down this issue, I would like to collect more information from you:
1.What is the transaction isolation level of your web application?
2.What is the transaction isolation level of your DTS package?
Open your DTS package in Enterprise Manager, right click the panel in DTS
package designer, select "Package Properties", switch to the Advanced tab,
check the Transaction isolation level.
3. Refer to this article to enable the trace flag T1204 and T3605 so that
you can get more information in the error log.

After the above operation, run your DTS package again to reproduce your
issue. And then please mail me (changliw_at_microsoft_dot_com) the SQL
error logs for further research.

%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\LOG.
Look forward to your response and we are glad to work with you for further
research.

either the ERRORLOG or SQLAGENT files.
I uncheck the "Use Transactions" box in the DTS package properties but I
still get the app locking up until I cancel the DTS operation.
Can you tell me where I check for the transation isolation level on thec web
server?

The transaction isolation level of your web application depends on your
coding. If you did not set transaction isolation level explicitly, by
default, it was READ COMMITTED.
Since there was no deadlock information in the error log, I think that this
issue should be related to lock escalation. I noticed that your source
table had about 0.5 million records and your DTS inserts batch size was
5000, it is very common that a large batch insert or update will cause
table level lock which is incompatible with shared lock. In this case, your
application could not read any data from the table until the bulk
insert/update finished.
I recommend that you schedule a time to run your DTS job when your web
application is not busy or has no workload.
You may also consider transfer the data incrementally, each time
transferring a few records to the destination table.
The methods can ensure that there is little impact to your application
performance.

coding. If you did not set transaction isolation level explicitly, by
default, it was READ COMMITTED.
Since there was no deadlock information in the error log, I think that this
issue should be related to lock escalation. I noticed that your source
table had about 0.5 million records and your DTS inserts batch size was
5000, it is very common that a large batch insert or update will cause
table level lock which is incompatible with shared lock. In this case, your
application could not read any data from the table until the bulk
insert/update finished.
I recommend that you schedule a time to run your DTS job when your web
application is not busy or has no workload.
You may also consider transfer the data incrementally, each time
transferring a few records to the destination table.
The methods can ensure that there is little impact to your application
performance.

Is the DTS package copying from or to the same table the pages are
accessing?

Because the web page connection has an isolation level of repeatable
read or serializable. Yes, it's excessive caution, but I suspect it's

DTExec stops running without error message
For a client i have built an application to give them the possibility to load packages for their data warehouse.
This application starts a database job in SQL Server, which in turn starts a dtsx package. This package loops over the contents of a table and starts the packages that are marked to be executed.
This all work well most of the time. Sometimes though, DTExec, the process running the packages, just stops running. There are no entries in the event viewer or anywhere else.
I run Windows Server 2003 with SQL Server 2005 SE SP1. The packages are run from the filesystem, not the database.
Has anyone encountered the same problem and know a solution? I can't find any info on the internet.

Do you have package logging turned on? Enable all of the logging events and see if you can catch something that way. Log to a text file or to SQL Server.|||No logging was active. I'll turn it on and see if the problem occurs again. One of the problems is that it stops randomly so it's not easily reproducable.

|||The problem occured again. I checked the log and the last thing in there is the OnPostValidate event of one of the script tasks. Again no error in the windows eventlogger and nop apperant reason why it stopped.
There have been some other problems though. It have been brought to my attention that the server on which the process runs has the tendancy to overheat. It gives a message that it will be shut down due to overheating or the loss of cooling and right after that a message that shutdown was cancelled by the administrator.
Because of this it occured to me that the problems might come from damaged memory. I'm going to have the client's IT support department check the systems memory and see where that gets me. Do you think that this is a possiblity? I would say that when memory is damaged it should't effect just one process, but that other processes would suffer from the same damage. This does not seem to be the case however. So it's a longshot but i'll have them check it anyway.

If the fault is suspected with DTEXEC, package logging may not help, but the console output from DTEEXEC itself may be of use. Ensure you have set the job step log, in teh Advanced tab of the job step. If DTEXEC itself errors I would expect this to capture it.
If a shutdown started and was then cancelled, it could have started to kill off processes? If it is running hot then you could get all sorts of strange corruptions, but they would probably not manifest themselves under normal conditions.

DTC Error
Hi all,
I built an ASP.Net application. The asp .net application uses distributed
transactions. I add "Transaction='Required'" for every data processing pages
and use "ContextUtil.SetComplete()" or "ContextUtil.SetAbort()" to commit or
abort the transaction.
When the IIS Server and SQL Server are on the same machine, this is no
problem. But when the
IIS server and SQL server are on different machines, error will occurs and
saying that "DTC can not support remote/network transactions".
How the solve this problem?

Actually I have already installed Network DTC.
The IIS Machine is WindowsXP, the SQL machine is Windows2003, the two
machines belong to different domain. Do I need to setup something?

I add the following registry values, set the firewall to allow ports form
5000~5020 & 135, and then restart both computers.
Ports : REG_MULTI-SZ : 5000-5020
PortsInternetAvailable : REG_SZ : Y
UseInternetPorts : REG_SZ : Y
