DTS from XML

Does anyone know how to create a dts package that will take a XML document and import the contents to a new table in sql.
I have looked in the tasks of DTS and cannot find the xml connection.
Any pointers to some samples would be great.
ThanksConsider upgrading to SQL Server 2005, which has extended support for XML including data import through the Integration Services application. (Interestingly, Integration Services does NOT export XML. Go figure...).sql

DTS from MS SQL to Excel Spreadsheet Issue

I'm getting an issue on a MS SQL DTS package that is doing a simple export from a MS SQL table to and Excel spreadsheet. I have three of these running but one is failing. Im using DTSRun to run all three of these DTS packages. The only recent change was to the DTS package to fix the first step to delete the data in the spreadsheet tab named Results. The process works correctly in development (on different servers). The same active directory ID is being used on all three DTS packages and all three do the same i.e. export data to an excel spreadsheet in the same file location but with different names. Ive Googled this but only came across access issues which does not make since since it is writing the other two spreadsheets just fine. Curious.

Error I See:

Thanks.
Jimright click on the spreadsheet and go to properties. what do you see?

the application dev team spent a week tossing something similar to this with Access for one their internal processes. I pointed it out a couple minutes after they asked me. I spent an hour laughing at my team of geniuses.

I am a joy to work with.|||Thanks for the idea. I thought of the read only flag as soon as I saw the read only error in the error log. Unfortunately that wasnt it. The issue was within the DTS package. If you open up the connection properties and click the top option to New Connection in an attempt to re-name the object, you actually create a new object with a new name leaving the older one in tacked but hidden in the background. This can only be seen if you go into Disconnected Edit under connections. There was an object names Connection1 and Connection2. These old connection objects where pointing to the development environment where the functional ID that was used to run the DTS did not have access to. Oops

Again thanks for the idea.

dts Foxpro MEMO Field

how can I import memo field from Foxpro table'
Many Thanks in Advance!!You can transform it to a large varchar() column or a text column.
Which of these to use would depend on the average and max lengths of the
memo field.
* in vfp
select max(len(theMemoField)) as max_len from theTable
If' the max length is over 8000, you'll have to use text. If it's <=8000
_and you can say with assurance_ that the max length will stay <=8000,
I'd tend to go with a large varchar column.

DTS for 100 text files

Hello DBA's:

I want to upload 100 text files to a single table on SQL Server 2000.
Records from these text files would be selected on the basis of a where clause.

What would be the best way of accomplishing this? Using DTS, I can do only one file at a time. Is there a faster approach.

Thanks

VivekTill the time you get a better solution you can use some file concatenation utility to join all those files into a single one and do the data load using DTS.

Create 2 DTS packages. An Outer and an Inner Package.

The Outer package has an ActiveX script task the uses the FSO to indentify all the files in a directory, then for each file set the text file connection of the inner package to the path of the text file identified in the Outer package. Then call the Inner package which just has a text file connection and a DB connection with a trasnformdata task.
Loop through all the files repeating the above.

This would be very automated and fairly quick depending on the size of the text files. And actually pretty easy to implement.

DTS Fixed Field length File Limitations

Hi,
I am trying to upload a fixed field text file to a sqlserver table using the DTS wizard. The txt file has 111 columns and the total length of a single row is 5897. The problem is when I use the wizard to specify the starting and ending of each column, its not allowing me to specify the columns beyond the position 4095.
Is there a limitation on this? if so is there a work around ? to solve this.
Any help on this is truly appreciated.

Thanks much. :)I've never encountered this problem but then I have never had a file quite that wide....

Personally what I would do is write a quick wee app or ActiveX Script to slice the file in half and then do the import in two stages... probably doesn't help much but it's the best suggestion I can give you.

DTS Export Wizard

Is there a way for me to globally select "Delete rows in destination table"
when performing an export via the Export Wizard?
It is not obviously visible to me, and I have a great deal of tables. I've
been clicking "Edit" for each one, and this isnt practical for obvious
reasons.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.there is an option under 'select object...' dialog.

or you can create a dml task and delete the data before insert new ones.

DTS Export to TEXT File

Okay,

Here the issue...

I am exporting a table to a text file using DTS. Such an easy task.

This process I had in place worked, then I added a new column to the table. So I had to remap the destination and source column. When I try to do this Enterprise Manager just gives me some type of mme.exe error that relates to memory and closes.

This column made column number 22. Everytime I do this to any table with 21 columns or less it works fine, tried to do this against some tables with 22 or more and ran into the same problem.

I searched Microsoft and did not find this as a limitation. So does anyone have some insight.

Thanks for you assistance.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;814113

DTS Export fails with "Invalid Object Name"

I have a database that used to have a table called MALL_Customers. The
table was renamed to tbl_Users, and a view was created called MALL_Customers
which simply selects all rows from tbl_Users, for backwards compatibility
with the web app accessing the database.
The database works fine; the web app works fine. All permissions are set
properly on all objects. The view is accessible via EM, as is the table.
However, when I attempt to run a DTS Export of this database to an empty
database on the same server, I get "invalid object name" on MALL_Customers.
Apparently somewhere, in some trigger, stored proc, or some other object,
there is a reference to MALL_Customers that doesn't recognize the VIEW as a
valid object, but is instead looking for a TABLE with that name. I cannot
find it anywhere, and I don't know where to start.
The overall question then is, how do I find all references to the text
"MALL_Customers" in the database schema so that I can track down why my DTS
package is failing. I have another database with a similar problem, and I
think the solution to this problem will also solve the other -- hidden
references somewhere in the database that cause "invalid object name" errors
when using DTS.
Where do I start?
Thanks in Advance,
Marcyou can search through the system table syscomments which, contains entries
for each view, rule, default, trigger, CHECK constraint, DEFAULT constraint,
and stored procedure
Ex:
select * from syscomments where text like '%MALL_Customers%'
Also you can use stored procedure sp_depends to know dependencies of the
existing object.
Ex:
sp_depends 'MALL_Customers'

DTS Execute SQL task on Access linked table

Can the DTS execute SQL task recognize a table in an Access database that is linked from another Access database?

I'm attempting to use a DTS Execute SQL task connected to Access1.mdb to make a new table in Access1.mdb that is using a Subquery from a linked table in Access2.mdb . (I know it sounds convoluded..) Its giving me an error in my FROM clause as if it can't recognize the linked table from Access2.mdb.

The reason why I'm doing this is that I'm not sure how to run an Access make table query from DTS that will overwrite the existing table in Access. I get an error that the table already exists.

Any Help? You can do testing in query analyzer by placing your select * from openquery statement. If it works in query analyzer then u could execute this sql statement in dts package.

By the way, since you are using DTS package, why not use MS Access connection which is more dynamic and stable than OpenQuery.

DTS error on GUID column

I am doing a DTS from table "source" to table "destination". However
"destination" has a primary key of data type uniqueidentifier and the source
doesn't have a corresponding map field. So I thought setting the
"destination" primary key to have a default value of newId() will
automatically insert a guid for every record inserted (just like a regular
identity key) but unfortunately this doesn't work. I get a message that says
"cannot insert null into the field fieldName" which makes sense because it i

possible? or could I change the transformation script to make it work and if
so, how? Thanks for any help.On guid primary key column undid primary key constraint, set allow null, set
default value to newId() and DTS worked fine and new guids got inserted.
After DTS set all constraints back as original. So everything's good.

DTS Error checking

Hello,
What would be good syntax to add to a DTS package to make sure that all of
the records from a live system made it into a warehouse table? Would it be
as simple as a COUNT(*) - and if so, how would I use that to notify or fail
if all of the records do not make it into the warehouse?
Thanks!Something like count would suffice but is not necessary. The dts either take
s
all the rows or it does not. How you log what fails is more importante. See
step2.
If I was working with a datawarehouse i would seriously entertain the idea
of a rock solid logging system. Here are some guidelines that could work for
y0ou.
Step1: For each transformation Step in the DTS, have an 'On Success' & 'On
Fail' workflow. The Success could goto a SQL Task and do a count and log
through a sProc For eg:
EXEC sp_lo_insert_DTSlog ?, 'DTSEXECUTESTEPS', 'STATUS', 'DTS Package :
DTSName Completed Successfully'
If successgul the DTS will execute the next transformation step in the
sequence and the failure would execute an ActiveX Script Task.(see step2)
Step2: ActiveX Script Named Fail Step1
Function Main()
Dim oPackage
Set oPackage = DTSGlobalVariables.Parent
DTSGlobalVariables("gvPkgStatusDesc").Value = "ERROR : DTS Package " &
DTSGlobalVariables("gvPackageName").Value & _
" - Failed to load STAGING table TableName"
oPackage.Steps("DTSStep_DTSExecuteSQLTask_1").DisableStep = 0
Set oPackage = Nothing
Main = DTSTaskExecResult_Success
End Function

DTS Error

I need to export some table data to Excel which I normally do with Query Analyzer as a .CSV file. However, one of the fields has a ton of comma's which screws up the formatting so I'm using the DTS Import/Export Wizard. I choose the .xls file and paste my query. When it runs I get the following error: "Failed to copy 1 table(s). Double click the error..." When I click on the error it gives me an "Invalid Pointer" message. I'm not sure where to go from here so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim
I figured it out...I had "USE (Name of Database)" in my query. Once I took that line out everything worked quite well.

ThanksHi
If you are only wanting to transfer a subset of the source tables columns
then you will need to restrict the columns in the source by specifying a SQL
query that selects the columns that your require.
